Earn a Masters by Research (MSc) at UCC

Recent graduates from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Future University of Egypt applying for a Masters by Research program in the School of Pharmacy at UCC will be able to avail of the EU fee rate.

A Masters by Research degree is a supervised research program that lasts for a minimum of one year (full-time). Students must undertake research equivalent to 90 ECTS credits, and they must then submit a thesis that will be reviewed by both internal and external examiners.

Masters by Research

A Masters by Research degree is a supervised research programme that one year full-time that lasts a minimum of one year. Students must undertake research equivalent to 90 ECTS credits and at the end of this time must produce a thesis that will be examined by internal and external examiners.

Students also have the option of participating in training modules to improve their research and other transferable skills. Details of available training modules are shown here.

Before applying for a Masters by Research in the School of Pharmacy, a prospective student should contact the Head of School to indicate their interest and agree on the most appropriate supervisor for the student’s Masters research programme. A student may have more than supervisor, where it is deemed appropriate but at least one of the supervisors should be from the School of Pharmacy.

Choosing a research topic

Prerequisites for application

There are two eligibility criteria for application for a Masters by Research in the School of Pharmacy. Students must demonstrate a proficient level of English and must have obtained a high mark in their undergraduate Pharmacy degree:
  • Minimum English proficiency level
    • IELTS: 6.5 with 6.0 in individual skills in the academic version of the exam
    • Cambridge Exams: An overall score of 176 with no less than 169 in any element of the ‘B1 First’, ‘C1 Advanced’, or ‘C2 Proficiency’ exams

  • Minimum undergraduate Pharmacy degree mark: CGPA 2.8 out of 4

Cost of Masters Programme

The typical fee for students from outside of the European Union for a one year Masters by Research is €11,600, however due to the long, positive, and ongoing relationship with the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Future University of Egypt, recent graduates applying for a Masters by Research programme in the School of Pharmacy will be able to avail of the EU fee rate of €4,855.

Expected costs of living in Ireland

Ireland is an expensive country compared with Egypt so it is important to consider living expenses when budgeting for undertaking a Masters in research. The following are examples of costs but the actual level will vary higher or lower.

Categories of costs to be considered:
  • Rent: €450-600 per month for a single room in a private accommodation
  • Utility bills: €65 per month for a student in a shared accommodation. This usually includes electricity, gas, rubbish collection, and internet access.
  • Food: €200 per month
